Work of the fruit and vegetable month June
Speaking of the work of the June fruit and vegetable month, it is good to say that in this period the summer season begins and it is good to prepare some useful processes in order to obtain the best results.
Already in these days we can proceed to the collection of some garden products, such as salads, various types of aromatic herbs, peas, green beans, radishes, carrots, and often also tomatoes, cucumbers and courgettes.
We can also proceed with the sowing of: Beetroot, Chard, Broccoli, Thistles, Carrots, Cauliflower, Cabbages, Cucumbers, Chicory, Beans, Green Beans, Endives, Lettuce, Parsley, Radishes, Rocket, Celery. Or we can plant small courgettes, cucumbers, tomatoes, pumpkins, melons, aubergines and peppers.
Before sowing or planting we will have to carefully prepare the soil; we continue weeding the infesting plants, then we spread on the ground some mature organic fertilizer or slow release chemical fertilizer; then we dig the soil in order to break the clods and mix the first 20-30 cm well. The next day we can use the plot so prepared for planting or planting vegetables; if we want to grow plants that produce large roots, such as carrots, scorzonere or turnips, we can lighten the soil with sand, in order to make it softer.
Some vegetables, in order to develop at their best, need guardians; tomatoes, for example, as well as aubergines, peppers and cucumbers, need elongated stakes, bamboo canes can be used, which are buried near the foot of the plant; over the weeks we will proceed by securing the plants to the brace, using raffia or rubberized wire.
Beans and climbing peas instead can be grown along a pergola, or the plots can be equipped with thin plastic nets, which allow the bean plants to grow at least two meters in height.
In order to obtain a tasty and abundant harvest it is essential to proceed with some operations that allow the soil to be kept at its best; therefore, speaking of the works of the June fruit and vegetable month, a fundamental operation consists in weeding the soil, so as to allow the passage of water in the lower layers, so that it reaches the root system and does not evaporate too quickly for too high temperatures . Then weeds and weeds that can threaten the health of different vegetable varieties should be eliminated. In this period it is essential to proceed with regular watering, always taking care to avoid an excess of water, a factor that can lead to the onset of fungal diseases and root rot. Irrigations should preferably be done in the evening to prevent high temperatures from causing thermal shocks to the plants. In the case of high solar radiation, it is also advisable to set up shading protections with special curtains.
Speaking of the orchard, also in this field, in this period it is necessary to prepare some jobs that are aimed at maintaining the health of the plants. For this reason, first of all, it is good to provide regular watering, always paying particular attention to the fact that water stagnations do not form which could cause the onset of rot and pathologies. If there is an excessive dispersion of water, it may be useful to resort to mulching the soil, so that a certain degree of humidity can be maintained without stagnation. Any weeds must be eliminated. This month is then rich in ripe fruits and therefore it is time to proceed with the collection of plums, figs, cherries and apricots. Treatments against pests and fungal diseases must also be performed to keep the plants healthy.
