Jobs of the month apartment October
Autumn has arrived and is already bringing us fresh nights, even if the maximum temperatures are still high. In October, let's get ready for the winter by organizing the green corner of the house, with works that will allow us to arrange our houseplants in the best way. The most important works of October foresee bringing the plants back home, remembering the needs of light and air of every single plant; if we do not know them it is time to inform us. For example the species of ficus need a lot of light, but we must keep them away from windows and doors, which could cause very dangerous blows of air; potos and croton, on the other hand, can even sit in a little dark corner, along with the dracena. We ensure that every plant has the space necessary for a correct development, avoiding getting the pots too close: the lack of light and air, caused by poor distances between the plants, is often the cause of leaf yellowing. Some house plants do not fear the cold very much and if you wish, especially in the southern regions, we can leave them under a porch or in sheltered areas of the garden or terrace, so that they can develop freely.
In general it is always good to avoid placing our plants near heat sources, such as radiators, heaters or fireplaces; It is also good to remember to avoid places of transit, so as to avoid accidental "clashes", which very often damage the leaves.
In bringing our plants home we will also have to remember that their needs have changed; we increase the environmental humidity often by vaporizing the leaves, possibly with demineralized water, so as not to stain them with limestone, especially in periods when domestic heating is in operation. Let us also remember that plants, with decreasing temperatures and hours of insolation, tend to have a period of rest, or semi-mature, vegetative, so they need less watering and fewer amounts of mineral salts, so we can suspend, or at least thin out , fertilizer supplies.
We can take advantage of this cool month to repot plants that need larger containers; in general a repotting is practiced when you notice roots that come out of the vase, or when the vase is excessively filled by the roots of the plants; remember that fast-growing and vigorous plants should be repotted every year, while those with slower growth can remain in the same container for 2-3 years. We always use a good soil: the quality of the growing medium is fundamental for the growth of plants, if in doubt let us advise you from an experienced nursery.
October is the month of cyclamens, which cheer us up with their bright colors even when the cold and gray days are looming. To best preserve them, let's remember to leave them outside in the hottest hours of the day, picking them up at home during the night; if we want to keep them in the house let them water regularly, avoiding water stagnation, and try to increase the humidity level by vaporizing the leaves daily. Small doses of fertilizer for flowering plants are certainly helpful in prolonging flowering.
Those who have already had experience with cold or temperate greenhouses know that one must always pay attention to some problems:
- insects and diseases; the too dry or too humid climate of the greenhouses often favors the onset of fungal diseases or the development of insects, let's remember to ventilate the greenhouse often, to increase air exchange. Let us also remember to constantly monitor the development of pests, in a small and closed environment the development is sudden.
- temperatures; daily insolation can cause abnormal temperatures in the greenhouse, even in the coldest months of the year; planning a shelter for our plants let's remember to prepare at least one window, so as to be able to aerate often, especially during sunny days: sometimes even in January the temperature inside a small greenhouse can reach 30 ° C, causing several damage to plants in vegetative rest that we are watering sparingly.
